December Keywords Increase A Modest 2%; Q4 Prices Surge 24%

January 6, 2005 -- Fathom Online released its Keyword Price Index today showing that in the month of December 2004, when online shopping reached a record $23.2 billion, the prices that advertisers paid for keywords on search engines increased overall a slight two percent. Still, keyword prices for Q4 of 2004 rose on average 24% from $1.37 to $1.70 because of steep increases in October and November.
Most surprising was the drop in consumer Retail Keywords in December by three percent, the only category in negative territory. After double digit percentage gains in October (50%) and November (25%), this sector appears to have peaked well before the holiday season reached its frenetic end.
