Sightseeing in Ponce

The south coast city of Ponce is already a popular day trip for visitors to San Juan because of its Big Sugar-era architecture, gaily painted firehouse-turned-museum, stately and shady central plaza and Ponce Museum of Art, reputedly the finest in the Spanish-speaking world outside of Spain. A morning of sightseeing in Ponce is easily combined with an afternoon tour of Hacienda Buena Vista. You must make a reservation in advance for one of the tours. Call the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico at 787-722-5882 on weekdays or 787-848-7020 on weekends. Four tours are offered daily, Friday through Sunday. Tours are available in both English (afternoons) and Spanish and cost US$5 for adults and US$2 for children under 12. You can also visit the Trust's headquarters at 155 Tetuan Street in Old San Juan to make reservations and to see displays on the island's ecology. Ponce is about a 90-minute drive from San Juan on the Luis A. Ferri Expressway. In Ponce, take Route 10 north to kilometer marker 16.8 and watch for the sign marking the entrance to the Hacienda on your left.
