Internet Business Opportunity Frank Lautenberg and Jon Corzine, New Jersey's senators, and Rob Andrews, congressman from New Jersey's first district, on Wednesday demanded that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency block Motiva from discharging into the river refining wastes that could be captured through a new, environmentally sensitive recycling process.

Free Money Motiva, which is seeking a change to an existing federal-state environmental accord, says it is acting in good faith. The company, at a cost of $94 million, is proposing to install two clean-air scrubbers at its Delaware City, Del., refinery. If operational by Dec. 31, 2004, the non-recycling scrubbers would cut emissions of sulfur dioxide at the plant by 27,000 tons per year.

Work At Home Business "We are anxious to talk with the lawmakers from New Jersey, and we'll be extending an offer to them in order to make sure they have the information they need and answer any concerns that they have," said Spiros Mantzavinos, external affairs manager at the Motiva refinery. "The proposal calls for what is known as the best available control technology not only throughout the United States but throughout the world."

Auction Coin Money Paper Under that order, Motiva must invest at least $116 million in environmental equipment, or clean-air scrubbers, that will reduce air pollution at the Delaware City refinery by 36,000 tons each year. Mantzavinos estimates his company will spend $140 million.
Franchise Business Opportunity Motiva wants to change the consent decree and install two non-regenerative scrubbers rather than regenerative scrubbers, which would be more costly. Regenerative scrubbers, not commonly used in refining processes now, reduce both air emissions and harmful byproducts for wastewater treatment.
Best Free Online Affiliate Lautenberg, Corzine and Andrews want Motiva to adhere to the original consent decree and install a regenerative or recycling scrubber upon its refining equipment, thereby reducing emissions into the air and protecting the Delaware River as well.
Blogging Money Thebillivard The three New Jersey Democrats protested Wednesday in a letter to EPA Administrator Christie Whitman that Motiva's "cheaper technology would essentially convert the air pollutants into water pollutants, and dispose of them in the Delaware River."
Best Home Based Business "Between two and four pounds of water pollutants would be created for every pound of air pollutants eliminated," they wrote. "Clearly, this shift of pollution from one medium to another is insupportable and violates a long-standing environmental goal that our states share, that of cleaning up the Delaware River."

Money Site Thebillivard Com Gale explains that the refining process -- converting crude oil into gasoline, home heating oil and lubricating oil -- produces byproducts that are pollutants, including sulfur and, in trace amounts, mercury.
Online Business Opportunity Using a regenerative scrubber, Valero discharges some of the refining byproducts into the air. It collects some as solid waste and landfills the material. And it treats some of the byproducts at a wastewater treatment plant.
Pay Per Click Affiliate Regenerative scrubbing "produces less of the water pollution that would be going into your wastewater treatment plant, but it produces a solid waste material that then has to be recycled in other industrial applications or landfilled," Gale said.
Cnn Money Thus far, the Justice Department, the EPA and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation have not agreed to Motiva's proposal.
Business Opportunity Lead Lautenberg fears the industry-friendly EPA of the Bush administration already has given the go-ahead to Motiva.
Affiliate Program Directory David Sternberg, a Philadelphia-based spokesman for the EPA, confirmed the agency had entered into talks with Motiva and with the Delaware environmental agency to modify the 2001 consent decree.
Making Money Program Sternberg spoke well of the company's proposal, claiming it promised notable clean air benefits to residents of New Jersey.
Work From Home Business "Although the EPA cannot discuss the details of any negotiations with the parties, those discussions involve possible revisions (of the consent order) that would further reduce air pollution from the refinery," Sternberg said.
