Prince Haakon to dedicate Baker Village

Prince Haakon to dedicate Baker Village

Date 4/22/1999 12:00 AM | Topic: News

The dedication of the Baker Residential Village will be marked with a special visit by Crown Prince Haakon of Norway.

The Crown Prince was invited by the City of Decorah to participate in its Sesquicentennial Celebration.

The Crown Prince will arrive in Decorah June 10, 1999. The visit will begin with events at the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, after which the Crown Prince will visit Luther. He will attend a luncheon, take a walking tour of the campus and participate in a discussion in the Olin Round Table Room.

Following the discussion, the Crown Prince will lay the cornerstone of the new Baker Residential Village.

"I think it's wonderful [that the Crown Prince will be there] because we have such a strong heritage with Norway in the history of the college," Interim President Richard Hemp ('65) said.

Hemp said the dedication of the Baker Village ties in well with the Prince's visit because the architecture of the buildings will have a Scandinavian theme. It is also significant because Prince Haakon's grandfather, Olav V, laid the cornerstone for the Center for Faith and Life.

After participating in the Baker Village dedication, the Crown Prince will attend the parade, opening ceremonies and street dance of the Decorah Sesquicentennial Celebration.

Crown Prince Haakon began his military education at the Officers' Candidate School/Navy at Horten and completed the first level of education at the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy in Bergen. After that he served as second in command on a missile torpedo boat for a year. He is the son of King Harald and Queen Sonja. The royal line began with the Crown Prince's great grandfather, Haakon VII.

He is currently studying political science at the University of California at Berkeley.
