Strong Persuader
Strong Persuader
Author: Kelly Ribeiro
When I was a child and wanted a toy, it was as simple as ripping out a picture from the Sears Wish Book and taping it to my mother's pillow. That's not to say I was a spoiled child, but in my mind, the process was pure genius. No begging or bribery required.
Now, after a few decades, my allowance has grown, the bank is prepared to share its wealth, and the salesperson at the local marina is standing in front of a shiny new boat with pen in hand. "So what seems to be the problem?" he asks. I respond, "Uh, well, I have to check with my spouse."
For many, confronting a significant other with visions of bows and sterns is like climbing Mount Everest without oxygen. Your head begins to spin, your pulse races, and incoherent, blundering words tumble from your mouth.
What you want is their approval. But to gain that, you must first include them in the decision-making process, says Craig Knapp, a psychologist, husband and owner of four boats in Rutland, Vermont. "By not making a unilateral decision, you can avoid many future problems," he explains.
* Begin by talking about issues each of you has about buying a boat. And remember, you're the one who wants it, so be patient and willing to listen.
* Go over options, such as rent, lease or buy; new or used; cheap, moderate or expensive.
* Talk about positives and negatives, and short- and long-term consequences of the decision you both are making. And then come to a conclusion, knowing that any decision can be altered.
One other suggestion is to get your spouse on a friend's boat before you suggest buying one, which is what happened to Knapp. You might be surprised to hear your spouse utter words similar to Mrs. Knapp's: "Gee, they're thinking of selling their boat. I think we should buy it."
But if you're still struggling for the right words, even after reading this, then grab an issue of Boating Life, a pair of scissors and a roll of tape. You still have a few hours left between now and bedtime to tape a picture of your dream boat to the pillow. - Kelly Ribeiro
